How to Step Out of the Drama Triangle

Understanding the Drama Triangle

A common pattern in relationships

Many relationship challenges follow a familiar pattern known as the Drama Triangle.
It was first described by psychologist Stephen Karpman.

When stress or conflict arises, people can unconsciously move between three roles:

Victim — feeling overwhelmed or powerless
Rescuer — trying to fix or take over
Persecutor — blaming, criticising, or controlling

Most of us move between these roles at different times, often without realising it.

Why this matters

This pattern can keep relationships stuck in cycles of:

• blame
• over-responsibility
• helplessness

Even when everyone involved is trying to do their best.

A more helpful way forward

There is a healthier alternative known as the Empowerment Triangle.

This shifts the roles into something more supportive and constructive:

Creator — focusing on choices and solutions
Coach — offering support without taking over
Challenger — being honest while encouraging growth

This approach helps create more balanced, respectful and honest relationships.

A gentle reflection

When something difficult happens, you might pause and ask yourself:

• Am I feeling stuck or powerless?
• Am I trying to fix things for someone else?
• Am I blaming or criticising?

And then gently explore:

• What would it look like to respond with more awareness, responsibility or support?

You can use this resource alongside the recorded process.

It can help to have a pen and paper nearby,
so you can notice what is happening inside you as you listen.

You’re welcome to pause the recording at any time and go at your own pace.
