What Do I Want To Do With My Life? Become a Detective and Discover Your Direction

Magnifying glass and detective's hatThere are certain questions that seem to follow us through life.

What do I want to do with my life?

Am I in the right career?

Should I change direction?

For some people these questions arrive as they leave school. For others they appear after redundancy, raising children, burnout, retirement, or simply the growing feeling that something isn’t quite right anymore. We often assume there must be one perfect answer waiting to be discovered if only we think hard enough.

Over the years I’ve come to believe something quite different.  Finding meaningful work is much less about making one big decision and much more about becoming a detective.  When detectives solve a mystery, they don’t begin by guessing the answer. They collect clues. Each clue might seem small on its own, but gradually patterns begin to emerge. One discovery leads to another until the picture becomes clearer.  I believe discovering work that suits you follows exactly the same process.

Long before I trained as a massage therapist and hypnotherapist, I worked in vocational guidance, helping people explore careers and make decisions about their future. During those years I met many people who felt completely stuck. They weren’t lacking intelligence or motivation. Most simply didn’t know where to begin.  Many were searching for certainty before they had gathered enough information to make a confident decision.

The people who made the greatest progress weren’t necessarily those who found the perfect career assessment or suddenly had a moment of inspiration. They were the people who became curious about themselves. They noticed what gave them energy, recognised the patterns that kept appearing throughout their lives, explored possibilities without putting pressure on themselves to have all the answers immediately, and gradually built a clearer understanding of who they were.  Every new discovery became another clue.

That is exactly why I created this workbook.  Rather than trying to tell you what career you should choose, it invites you to put on your detective’s hat and begin gathering evidence. You’ll explore your personality, interests, strengths, values and preferred ways of working. You’ll investigate careers that spark your curiosity, learn what those jobs are really like, and discover why talking to people already doing the work often reveals far more than any job description ever could.  The goal isn’t to rush towards an answer, it’s to understand yourself so well that the right direction begins to reveal itself naturally.

Sometimes one conversation changes everything. Sometimes one personality assessment confirms something you’ve always known deep down. Sometimes you realise you’ve been following clues throughout your life without ever recognising them for what they were.

By the end of the process you may not have every detail of your future mapped out, but you’ll almost certainly know yourself more clearly than when you began. From there, good decisions become much easier to make.

I’ve made this workbook completely free because I believe everyone deserves access to thoughtful vocational guidance, whatever stage of life they’re in. Whether you’re leaving school, considering a career change, returning to work after raising a family, or simply wondering if there’s something that would suit you better, I hope it gives you a practical place to begin.

So, if you’re ready, put on your detective’s hat.
